Roland Baumgartner
Roland Baumgartner was born in Basel (Switzerland) in 1950. After a four years apprenticeship with his father and grandfather in violin making and eight semesters at vocational college, he did practical work in Paris with Daniel Moinel. He continued the dynasty of violinmakers founded 1920, and established 1974 his own shop in Basel. Today his workshop is specialized in repairs, restorations, expertise, appraisal and dealing in fine stringed instruments and bows.
Roland Baumgartner has numerous publications and co-publications to his credit, lectures in Europe and USA. He has served as a judge in international violin-making competitions in Cremona, Freiburg, Paris, Mittenwald, Albuquerque, Oakland CA, Portland, Baveno etc. 2004 he was President of the violinmaker jury at the Etienne Vatelot competition in Paris. 1987 he was a member of the “Comitato d’Honore” at the Stradivari exhibition in Cremona. Member of the scientific committees Guadagnini exhibition in Cremona 1999 and „...four centuries of violin making art“ in Cremona 2000.
Roland Baumgartner is a member of the VSA and since 1981 a member of the Entente Internationale des Maîtres Luthiers et Archetiers d’Art, (President 1991 – 1993).
